3D Printed Ornaments are Decorating the White House Christmas Tree

3DornamentsIt’s been a great year for technology and innovation and 3D printing has had one of the best years by far. From solar energy panels to human livers, giant houses to bite-sized candy, 3D printers have been working non-stop this past year to make the world that much cooler.

And now, as we get into the spirit of the holidays, here’s one more story for all you 3D printer fans out there: even the White House is celebrating the amazing year that 3D printing has had by displaying 3D printed ornaments on the White House Christmas tree!

Back in October, the White House announced the 3D Printed Ornament Challenge on whitehouse.gov in partnership with the Smithsonian Museum. The challenge invited makers, artists, designers, engineers, or pretty much anyone interested in 3D modeling and 3D printing to design a winter holiday-inspired ornament. And boy did people deliver!

From around the country, more than 300 creative, whimsical and beautiful winter-inspired ornament designs were submitted. Twenty were chosen as finalists and five were selected to be on display in the White House. You can check out the ornaments being made in this video.

The 3D Printed Ornament Challenge is building upon the White House’s interest in spurring innovation and creativity through making. As President Obama explained back in July, “Today’s D.I.Y. is tomorrow’s Made in America.” The Obama administration is also working to create more opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects, allowing makers to turn their creativity into products.

And while that’s great news for the world of innovation, we here at Dream It Do It Nebraska would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you out there a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It’s the time of year for family and friends, gift giving and wish granting. We hope you all have a great holiday vacation in the coming weeks and enjoy the magic of the season!

We appreciate every single one of you that reads our blog and keeps us updated with interesting stories about the latest in technology. You help us keep things exciting for us every week and you’re the reason we keep scouring the news for the latest stories on what makes the world cool. So from all of us at DIDI, here’s to happy families, good grub, cool gizmos and gadgets, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
